Reagan’s Draft Talk Boosts 1972 Presidential Hopes
Reagan reiterated denials of a candidacy while noting a former aide, Thomas Reed, travels collecting speaking engagements and GOP race data to run as California’s favorite son. Governors view Rockefeller as Romney weakens, Nixon loses support, and Reagan could emerge if Nixon stumbles or Romney falters. McCall calls Reagan a standout political property though advises more governance experience.

Powell Would Take Dodd Type Censure
Powell, speaking from The Bahamas, said he would accept a House censure like Dodd but not a public rebuke in the chamber. He argues justice for black men lags behind that for white men in America. Powell notes his exclusion from Congress over $46,228 in government funds while Dodd faced more than $116,000 in private political contributions. A House committee urged Powell reimburse his wife’s salary and appear under escorts, but his exclusion was approved instead. He was later reelected in a special NYC election and challenges the exclusion.
