Western World's Merchant Marine Falling Says Briton
Stanley Heeson head of the British Sailors Society warned Sunday that the Western world merchant marine is rapidly falling behind in world competition due to failure to adopt automation. He cited Japanese ships using modern techniques and automation reducing crew needs, while Britain and the United States cling to large crews. Heeson noted a current British seamen strike costs shippers millions monthly and argued reforms are needed to attract intelligent, hard working sailors. Heeson stressed his welfare organization helps sailors of all nationalities and that public sentiment toward strikers remains muted.
