Two Men Killed in Exploding Melon Car in Oregon
QAKRIDGE Ore UK A railroad boxcar loaded with watermelons packed in straw caught fire and exploded southeast of here Thursday. Bodies of two men believed transients were found in debris. Conductor P W Canley of the southbound Southern Pacific freight alerted the engineer as the flaming car exploded. State police and railroad officials theorize the men started a fire with canned heat, it spread to straw, they were overcome, and heat turned moisture in the melons to steam creating the blast. The crew was unharmed and main line traffic paused about four hours.
