Catholic physicians urged the American Medical Association to resist a Board of Trustees proposal to repeal abortion laws. At a hearing 52 witnesses debated abortion as murder or a social necessity, while delegates prepared to vote on the plan, which would let a woman and doctor decide without legal intervention.

Washington report notes college freshmen may lose their draft deferments if Congress approves Nixon’s plan to end student deferments retroactive to April 23. The authors say the authority could apply to the next academic year, with retirees and older freshmen affected, while the current lottery and deferment rules would delay immediate induction.

Bill to limit Channel oil and gas leases fails in Assembly
The Assembly defeated a bill to restrict oil and gas leases in Santa Barbara Channel, with debate over conservation and local protections.
