Champion pledges better HEW program for HMOs in LA
Hale Champion under secretary of HEW outlines a seven point plan to spur prepaid group practices or HMOs. The steps include extending federal grants, guiding where HMOs form, reorganizing grant and qualification units, speeding applications and regulations, and boosting Medicare and Medicaid enrollment in HMOs. Champion, a longtime HMO supporter, praised HMOs while noting past HEW shortcomings and promising improved cooperation. The Group Health Institute, hosted by Family Health Program of Long Beach, is sponsored by the Group Health Foundation.
