Senate and House committees work to reconcile differences in a veteran benefits bill. The plan increases monthly aid to 100 dollars and 1900 dollars of total aid, extends eligibility from 36 to 45 months, and allows up to ten years to use benefits. It includes tuition grants and up to 52000 dollars yearly in low interest loans, facing opposition from House leaders and the Nixon administration. Cost estimates run to about 1.9 billion for the next fiscal year, with 61.4 million for the House version, as the June 30 deadline nears for four million veterans who served 1955 to 1966.
