Army bungling keeps family hungry drives soldier to seek discharge
Spee Kenneth Swerczkowski says an Army error placed him in the stockade for eight months and cut his pay for nearly two years. The Army argues he was absent without leave from Selfridge Air Force Base Michigan and wrongfully drew 7761 in salary and allotments for his wife and two daughters. He reports his family lived on base housing and charity as they sold a car and moved in with relatives. The case spurred debate as Sen Taft failed to strip domestic workers from a minimum wage bill while the Army presses for repayment and a continued AWOL penalty.
