Kissinger reassures Asian allies on treaties and ties
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told a Japan Society dinner in New York that the United States will not abandon Asia after Vietnam. He asserted firm treaty commitments across Asia and the Pacific, urged allies to take primary responsibility for defense, and pledged continued support for Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. He also offered new economic steps for Japan, including nuclear fuel shipments and grain reserve cooperation, while signaling possible future ties with Vietnam and Cambodia if policies moderate.
