Campaign to rename California state campuses gains support
The California Assembly approved AB 229 by Lawrence Kapiloff 45 to 10 to allow most campuses to adopt simpler names with trustees’ approval. Campuses in San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, San Luis Obispo and Arcata would automatically rename, while others require consent. A separate bill, ARI11 by Maddy, passed 44 to 16 with 8 abstentions to extend student body control over campus fee setting, keeping $20 fees and veto rights intact. In Tokyo, an earthquake shook the Hokkaido coast.
