Supervisors Pressure Legislature Over Tax Relief Standoff

County supervisors denounced the Legislature for stalling a property tax relief bill that could offset a 25.2 cent county tax increase after approving a 251 million spending rise. They urged Senate Finance Committee action on a measure tapping 0.9 percent of state sales tax revenue, which could cut the tax by about 39 cents per 100 dollars of valuation and 60 million overall. The push followed a 125 billion county budget, the largest in history, and cited Senate chair George Miller as blocking a roll call. If relief fails, a 1 percent ceiling move may be pursued.
