Wallace Predicts He Will Sweep South in November
Wallace and former Georgia governor Carl Sanders at the Southern Governors Conference in Charleston predicted Wallace could carry all 13 southern states and fringe states like Delaware and Maryland in a third party bid. Governors Nunn McKeithen McNair and Rockefeller weighed Wallace’s chances, while Humphrey drew support from North Carolina’s Moore and Texas Connally. McCarthy gained New York endorsers as Paris talks loomed. Rockefeller urged flexible federal aid with fewer restrictions to states and communities.
