Washington report shows 1958 total of 97,910 fires, down from 1957’s 83,392 acres burned under Smokey Bear and Keep America Green campaigns. Incendiary fires rose with 19,581 caused by arsonists, debris burners 18,6 percent, and smokers 14,171. Lightning started 10,828 fires.
