In Los Angeles a new facial identification overlay uses transparent films to generate coded facial patterns for locating suspects. Sheriff Pater Pilchess notes the system can reconstruct a suspect from witness descriptions within about 20 minutes, following 16 years of research and 500 transitional films.
A 17 car freight derailment near Barstow damaged both main tracks on the Santa Fe transcontinental line. Officials blamed a broken wheel and a tangled incident for the wreck, with crews taking about 244 hours to restore one track and shuttling trains over the remaining line during repairs. The westbound chief was to reach Los Angeles about six hours late.
