Airlines lack mandatory decompression training for crews

A FAA poll shows major U S airlines do not require emergency decompression training for pilots and flight attendants. Despite a recent DC10 incident near Ontario, training officials say rapid decompression is too rare to justify mandatory chamber exercises, while the Air Force requires such training for pilots and crew.

Altitude chamber training for airline crew vows safety

SOTT SELL SAM and other civilians take a one day classroom course and a half day in a pressure chamber to simulate 43,000 foot altitude. Students wear oxygen masks, briefly lose oxygen, then rapidly drop to 8,000 feet. Lt Col George Pendergrass says the training is necessary to prevent catastrophic decompression. The program, offered to airline pilots and stewardesses for five dollars through FAA and armed forces cooperation, has had few participants in Oklahoma City.

Sky marshals grounded to deter hijacking says transport head

Washington officials say about 1,300 air marshals are on duty, with two thirds at airports and the rest on flights. By Aug 1, nearly all U S boarding gates will have screening devices. The aviation security push follows declining hijacking success rates and a record of one hijacker commandeering a plane to Cuba with armed officers aboard. Volpe notes 12,000 daily flights and FAA security surges.
