Tennessee campaign trip ends in courthouse clash
A Tennessee town campaign stop escalated into a confrontation at Haywood County Court House as Deputy Sheriff George Sullivan and Civil Rights Commission field reps Ward Bonnell and Norm Simpson argued over voter registration. Bonnell denied Kefauver involvement, Sullivan labeled him a liar, and Simpson said the group was there to study Negro registration in a county that recently opened rolls to Black voters after reconstruction.
