Artificial ankle hailed from Long Beach doctor this year
A Long Beach physician Dr. Richard C. Smith and his brother Dr. Robert Smith developed an artificial ankle to relieve arthritis. The two physicians, aided by Santa Ana patient trials, describe a two piece prosthesis with a talus anchored dome and tibial cup, cemented with methyl methacrylate. The device, made by Wright Manufacturing, has seen multiple implantations in Southland hospitals and a global rollout including France and England.
