Los Angeles County May jobs hit record 3.16 million
Los Angeles County employment reached 3,162,400 in May, a 2.3 percent rise from last year and an 8,000 increase from April, while unemployment fell to the lowest May level in 10 years. Statewide civilian employment also climbed to 7,955,000 as unemployment dropped to 327,000, the lowest May figure since 1959. AFSCME won certification for 2,000 county probation workers and AFL-CIO Local 434 for 57 county pharmacists, boosting union representation amid rising building activity and gains in service sectors. Nonmanufacturing growth led the year, with aerospace layoffs and auto plant slowdowns offset by seasonal boosts in other industries. The 3.9 percent Southland unemployment rate in May matched April’s rate and marked a 12-year low.
