Nixon probes offshore oil rights sparking industry ire
President Nixon proposes abandoning U.S. claims to offshore petroleum resources beyond a 25 to 30 mile line, risking billions in potential oil. The National Petroleum Council opposes the move, arguing it would cede rights to subsea reserves under Geneva Convention terms, while industry groups push for extending U.S. sovereignty farther offshore. The plan seeks UN Sea bed Committee action and draws mixed opinions among officials and advisers.
