Donor kidney shortage eyed in Southland crisis
Medical leaders reported a severe shortage of donor kidneys in Southern California with 323 patients on last year’s wait list and only 104 transplants. They urged public action to boost donations, highlighting failed organ donor cards and proposing driver’s license indicators. The waiting list has doubled since 1969, and nationally more than 2,000 remain awaiting transplants. Jerome Joerger, a Fullerton father of ten, exemplified patients dependent on dialysis while awaiting a donor kidney.
