Defense Department halts F111 production with 543rd plane
Washington reports the Defense Department will stop manufacturing the F111 fighter bomber after the current run ends late next year with the 544th plane, far short of the original order. Deputy Defense Secretary William P. Clements Jr. cited reduced demand for the aircraft and unmet needs of other Defense Department programs. General Dynamics, the maker, protested the decision, noting the aircraft’s performance in Indochina and its growth beyond initial difficulties.

Whitlam says Australia rethinks base pact with U.S.
Prime Minister Gough Whitlam announced the 1963 agreement allowing a U.S. naval communications station in Australia is outdated and should be renegotiated. Talks at diplomatic level are under way with negotiations to be completed later this year. The pact, signed in 1963, expires in 1986 and permits a U.S. base near Cape Darwin, with Whitlam noting its terms are no longer acceptable and would not be undertaken by any country today.
