Califor nia gang members sentenced to die in Velten slaying

Four members of the Vagos motorcycle club, Clarence Smith Jr Richard Keine Richard Greer and Thomas Gladish, were sentenced to die in the gas chamber Aug 1 for the February 13 mutilation slaying of William Velten a 26 year old University of New Mexico student. Jurors found them guilty of first degree murder rape and sodomy with a mandatory death sentence imposed due to the murder conviction.

Burglary Denial in Naples Home Theft Case In Long Beach

Compton resident Russell Rathert, 29, pleaded innocent in Long Beach Superior Court to burglarizing a Naples area home on Naples Canal. He was remanded after arraignment with July 12 set for trial. Witnesses described a police chase through canals and shrubbery, including a dip in a canal as neighbors pursued him.

Tests ordered for confessed robber

A 20 year old San Pedro man Kenneth Erick Parrish was ordered to undergo 90 days of diagnostic testing at the California Institute for Men in Chino to explain why he turned from a law abiding citizen to a shotgun wielding robber earlier this year He pleaded guilty to two armed robbery counts and originally faced four robbery charges and one count of attempted robbery The two incidents include the February 15 theft of more than 1200 from Park Western Rental Co in San Pedro and the March 4 shotgun point robbery of a Don al d s hamburger restaurant in Long Beach with over 850 taken The court action was taken in Long Beach Superior Court by Judge John A Arguelles after a torn probation report suggested differing recommendations between prison and a lighter sentence
