Nixon Sets Brisk Pace in Newport California Visit
President Nixon held a brisk press briefing at the Newport Beach villa, announcing a slate of appointments including Donald E. Johnson as VA administrator and John Reese Stevenson as State Department legal adviser. He formed a 15 member Arms Control and Disarmament Agency advisory committee and a Vietnam veterans committee, proclaimed Flag Day and Flag Week, and discussed troop withdrawal possibilities with Thieu. Johnson, Johnson’s wife Mary, and the new Vietnam veterans panel headlined the announced changes. Johnson, a WWII infantry veteran and former American Legion leader, will chair the new committee with key cabinet and agency heads. Nixon noted lower college benefits applications from veterans and pushed for new motivation pathways. Stevenson succeeds Meeker, and the arms control panel includes McCloy and a dozen notable figures from government and industry.
