Ojai Festival Encore Under Thomas Begins Strong Music Year
The Ojai Festival under new music director Michael Tilson Thomas presented eight West Coast premieres, four first in America, and three first ever. The festival mixed old and new, including Carlo Farina and Mouret pieces, Foss Orpheus with Jess Levine, Boulez Eclat Multiple, Copland threnodies, Haydn, Bach, Stravinsky, and Mozart works performed with vigor despite limited rehearsal time. Thomas's authoritative yet modest conducting earned praise as the festival impressed with varied, engaging programming.

LBCC ensembles shine in annual spring concert
Long Beach City College hosted three groups from students and older residents in a joint spring concert at the LBCC auditorium. Prokoffi’s Lieutenant Kije suite opened with a compact 50-member orchestra. Brahms German Requiem followed with a disciplined chorus under Frank Allen. Soloists La Vonne Clay and Marvin Ekedal added praised color as the performance explored death and a call to the living.
