Safer cigarettes debated at New York parley
Opening sessions of the Third World Conference on Smoking and Health in New York discussed a “safer” cigarette using filters to cut tar and nicotine. Dr. Keith of Celanese Fibers Co. cited declines in unfiltered brands and rising filtered sales, while Dr. Cooper urged health education and warned that the cigarette kills many. Other notes covered teen smoking rates, quitting progress, proposed higher taxes, ad bans, and the ineffectiveness of prohibition.
