Nixon calls Japan equal partner in world
President Nixon welcomed Japan's Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka as an equal partner in peace and world progress during a South Lawn ceremony. Nixon cited shifts since the 1950s from a senior partner dynamic to a joint Pacific and global role, calling Japan a world power and praising the allied path from war to peaceful cooperation. Tanaka said he would discuss Pacific and Atlantic issues, aiming to deepen U S Japanese relations. In Germany, a East German army lieutenant defected by swimming the Elbe to West Germany, then returned, with border officials offering no motive.
