Brigadier General Daniel James Jr the highest ranking Black officer in the Air Force was promoted today to major general in a Pentagon ceremony Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird pinned on the silver stars. James a former fighter pilot now serves as deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. present were his wife and son Air Force Captain Daniel James VI plus colleagues and officials from Pensacola Florida where James was born.
