In NORTH HOLLYWOOD a tall masked burglar armed with a snubnosed pistol entered the home of Mrs. Mildred Chastain at about 1 am. She grappled with him after he demanded quiet, then the intruder fled as neighbors saw him cross the street and escape through a back yard. Police conducted a house to house search of a two block area.
Los Angeles councilman Patrick D. McGee asserts he will hold both his city and state assembly seats for now despite a ruling by Attorney General Edmund G. Brown that dual officeholding creates a conflict of interest. McGee says he is not paid as an assemblyman and plans to keep the jobs until after a potential Feather River water project special session or until no session is expected. He argues state water concerns affect Los Angeles and the state equally.
An anonymous letter demanded $25,000 under threat of poisoning the water supply prompting guards to surround six Santa Barbara reservoirs. Mayor Floyd O. Bohnett kept the letter secret to aid FBI tracing. The note directed payment to auto dealer Claude O. Phipps and hinted at further instructions. A phony drop location and a second set of instructions were reported, with two truck drivers later cleared by police. The extortionist claimed to possess botulinum toxin and threatened use of 200 centimeters of the substance.
