Ways and Means votes to slow interstate highway funding
U S House committee votes 15 to 10 to curb interstate program spending. Plan proposes up to 1 billion in highway revenue bonds and extending the program beyond 1972. If enacted, 244 to 600 million in annual allocations would drop, with federal share around 90 percent. President urged raising gasoline tax to 4.5 cents to cover deficits.

WESTPORT Mass July 1 The American freighter Luckenbach collided with the New Orleans Francisville about two miles off Buzzards Bay Injuries were reported The Luckenbach bound for Philadelphia while the Francisville was sailing from Boston The Coast Guard at Boston reported the vessels showed damage with a 20 degree listing and engine room flooding but both were deemed not in danger by Cmdr W C Grays as heavy fog shrouded the scene

Destroyer Sponsor Misses the Boat
In Bay City Michigan Mrs Lillian McCormick failed to board the champagne launch as the sponsor for the 4,500 ton destroyer Lynde McCormick. The vessel named for her husband, an admiral, required a tug to reach the harbor for the christening.
