Striking WV Miners Shut Down Coal Mines Across States

West Virginia coal miners halted nearly all operations in the state and expanded a walkout into Ohio and potentially Pennsylvania and Illinois. Roving pickets shut three Southern Ohio mines in Meigs County, with 1,400 to 1,500 workers refusing to work. The action, affecting up to 59,300 WV miners, aims to pressure operators to settle disputes via arbitration rather than federal courts and seeks the dropping of injunctions and fines. The strike spans two UMW districts based in Charleston and Beckley, though not officially sanctioned by the union.
