Religious Study Program Moved to Fourth and Fifth Grades
Long Beach Board of Education approved releasing about 5,600 fourth and fifth grade students for religious instruction in churches during the last period. The shift from fifth and sixth grades avoids conflict with state mandated foreign language in sixth grade and minimizes interference with school hours. Officials expect roughly 5,500 students to participate, with community representation from the Long Beach Council of Churches, Roman Catholic, and Evangelical churches. Additional actions include a new elementary report card manual, a preschool medical exams contract with the Children's Clinic, vocational credentialed teachers in high schools and Long Beach City College, and an engineer hired for a historic study of weaknesses at Newcomb School.
