Long Beach approves oil production tax hike

Long Beach City Council voted 8 to 1 to raise the oil production license tax from 6 to 7 cents per barrel. Critics led by H Douglas Lemons called the move punitive against oil and landowner-royalty interests while city officials cited higher costs from oil industry price increases. The measure would raise about $209,000 in revenue for the two months remaining in fiscal 1975-76.

Bellflower Trustees pass consent agenda policy stance

The Bellflower School Board adopted a consent agenda policy 3-2 to speed noncontroversial items while trustees argued over its use. Marilyn Barton pushed for debate time on controversial items and sought open discussion, but Georgia Mullen opposed the measure. The board also created a 10 member ad hoc community advisory committee to work with the Land and Building Use Committee on an unused 18 acre site. Supt Gwenge reported on PUC hearings in Long Beach Aug 19 and 20 about telephone rate restructuring, noting a prior 50 percent increase was canceled before effect and that revised plans include a 3 cent measured service charge totaling about $2.44 monthly district-wide.
