Assembly OKs teen drink right sparks broad debate
The vote on an age of majority measure split parties with 30 Democrats and 29 Republicans approving. Edwin Berg protested the bill as too broad saying it would cut off child support for widows and divorced women when children turn 18. The act would raise rights for 18-year-olds except drinking and voting. Voting rights already shifted by a federal amendment. California currently allows 18-year-old women to wed without parental consent but men need 21.
