Freeing of dissidents in Korea called trick
In Seoul the release of 14 political prisoners by President Park Chung-hee was denounced as a trick by dissident groups and the opposition. About 150 prisoners, including ex-presidential candidate Kim Dae-jung, remain jailed under the 1975 emergency decree banning criticism of Park’s government. The Democratic Unification Party called the move an expedient, not a true step toward democracy. The Families of Political Prisoners urged lifting the decree and unconditional releases.
