California crime rates rise slower than national average
Sacramento reports serious crime in California rose 4.9 per cent in the last quarter, below the national 15 per cent rise and western states 17 per cent. Violent crime fell 7 per cent in robberies and 1 per cent in forcible rapes, with murders up 3.5 per cent. property crime, notably larceny, increased but less than the national pace.

Suspect bound for trial in Long Beach liquor store holdup
A 32 year old man known as Fred Douglas Madson also Freddie Tidmore was bound over for trial in Long Beach Superior Court after being jailed on $50,000 bond in the December 20 1972 Wooden Shoe liquor store robbery and shooting. Clerk John Bell was shot five times but recovered and identified Madson. A second witness 18 year old Dennis McConnell faced preliminary hearing on a strongarm robbery arrest. The judge ordered Madison held on burglary armed robbery and assault with intent to murder charges with July 29 arraignment slated.

One Compton teen was ordered to California Youth Authority custody and another to diagnostic testing for 90 days in the October kidnapping of Kathy Ann Lindsey. A third defendant pled guilty last month and awaits sentencing, with Keith Elis Welch facing Friday. Don Schindele reported the incident after police halted two cars in North Long Beach.
