Senate panel seeks $10 billion cut in defense budget

Senate Armed Services Chair John Stennis calls a proposed $10 billion cut austere yet essential to fund national survival. The panel boosts defense procurement to $19.2 billion from a Nixon request of $20.3 billion, while overall defense asks reach $71.2 billion. Proxmire and Hatfield push more reductions, with further force cuts to 2.5 million and European and Korean deployments debated.

Kennedy cites unrealized deficit outlook and slow growth

From Our National Bureau WASHINGTON The Nixon Administration faces an unrealistically large anticipated surplus of 1.3 billion. Secretary of the Treasury David Kennedy told reporters that the fiscal 1971 deficit will likely exceed the President’s small projection due to slower business recovery. He noted upcoming industrial and GNP data will show slow growth, with regions like Southern California and Seattle hit by defense cuts, possibly no growth. Kennedy said defense cutbacks yield a peace dividend and further cuts may be smaller than expected, stressing it is about preventing further expansion rather than disarming.
