Arson investigator John Spiller ties a Wednesday garage blaze to youths selling bottle rockets and notes most arrests involve juveniles. Fire Chief Don Beckman cites sparklers’ glow as a trigger and cites six fires before safe and sane stands opened. Mayor Beanstine and Bennitt clash on a potential city ban or statewide action.

Long Beach State theft case targets AS officers and cash controls

W Jeffery Lakes, a nonstudent employee and former business manager, is accused of taking about $14,000 from Long Beach State University student funds. An audit found $12,755 missing, with $13,774 preliminarily identified. Lakes allegedly removed accountant Moniak from accounting duties in 1977 after tensions, while critics say lax internal controls allowed excess cash on hand. Authorities note the University Union fund relies on petty cash, and the AS operation had excessive access and holdings compared with other campuses.
