Nixon remains focused on the 1968 race, pacing toward the Republican convention showdown with Nelson Rockefeller. He refuses debates and counters Rockefeller with frequent topical comments while portraying his national campaign as sufficient, citing strong fundraising and broad business support. He criticizes a proposed 5 percent travel tax as unjust and burdensome to middle class travelers.
In Pueblo a bear is recovering after a weekend incident in which an 18-year-old youth faces three charges. Police say Larry Hemmer was charged with liquor violation cruelty to animals and violation of the 2000s Cuilen after a half-empty bottle of whisky was found near the bear’s campsite. An officer remarked the bear’s condition suggested someone may have consumed the first gallon.

Wallace spent a quiet day in Montgomery after an eight day swing through Massachusetts, Ohio and Maryland calling the trip highly successful and dismissing hecklers.
A fragmentary report notes several stops as Fulks, described as making a lot of noise, draws attention. The quote from the former Alabama governor expresses satisfaction that gains appear in various polls.
