Russian navy captain defect and disappear in Europe
Russian destroyer commander Nicholas Shadrin defected to the United States in 1959. He disappeared 18 months ago during a mission in Vienna. Lawyer Richard Copaken, hired by Shadrin’s wife, says Shadrin is imprisoned in a Soviet military prison and accuses the Ford and Carter administrations of blunders. Copaken has met in West Berlin five times and says state secretaries discussed the case with Russian diplomats. He notes President Ford wrote to Brezhnev last year and that Shadrin began passing intelligence to U.S. agencies after defecting.
