Female conductor leads Broadway show for first time
Liza Redfield, a red haired musician from New York, becomes the first permanent female conductor of a Broadway show, taking over The Music Man. She rose from piano concerts at eight to study at the University of Pennsylvania, then moved through publishing and recording work before conducting summer stock and Off Broadway. Redfield says talent and luck, plus diligence, opened this path, and she notes audiences are more curious about a woman conductor than concerned about her skill.
