Milwaukee policeman rescues five from burning apartment

A 160 pound Milwaukee policeman captured two men while women and a child escaped from a second floor apartment during a Wednesday fire. Patrolman LeRoy Waszak pulled a leg tendon but was treated and released from hospital. The five jumpers escaped unharmed.

Puerto Rican Captain Wins Medal of Honor in Vietnam

Capt Euripides Rubio Jr of Ponce becomes the first Pherin Rican to receive the Medal of Honor in Vietnam and the second Puerto Rican to earn the nation’s highest military award. Rubio died at 30 after repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to aid the wounded, distribute ammunition, and resecure positions amid a massive attack. His widow Mrs Llena S Rubio of Hato Rey and their children, Edgardo and Llena, were invited to the presentation in Washington, D C, presided over by Army Secretary Stanley R Resor. Rubio’s unit, the 1st Battalion 28th Infantry, 1st Division, faced a numerically superior foe during the action.

Senate rejects softer marijuana penalties in major drug reform

The Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the Assembly approved bill that would soften marijuana penalties and toughen penalties for dangerous drugs like LSD. Only five members supported the measure in a key vote. seven were needed to advance the bill. The sponsor, Assemblyman W. Craig Biddle, Riverside, argued the bill would uniform and strengthen drug laws.

Yorty Signs and Disavows Tippler Tax Plan

Two Unions Vote For Merger In Los Angeles

In Los Angeles the United Packinghouse Workers of America voted overwhelmingly to merge with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. The combined 500,000-member union will be known as the Meat Cutter8, following Tuesday approval by the Amalgamated Meat Cutters. A spokesman cited a near unanimous result after a brief debate.
