McNamara Urges No Letup In Viet Air War

Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, concluding a five day Vietnam visit, says there will be no easing of the air war over North Vietnam. He notes American commanders will receive all necessary troops but may justify limits on further increases beyond 470,000 war duty. He cites heavy costs to Hanoi for aiding the insurgency and says the air campaign aims to curb infiltration and supply lines. In separate clashes, nearly 1,000 North Vietnamese attackers overrun a South Vietnamese base camp before being driven off with at least 116 killed and many wounded. American paratroopers suffer 26 dead and 49 wounded in a fortified ambush. McNamara also reportedly pressed limited integration of Vietnamese troops into U.S. units.
