Pentagon ends forced discharge for pregnant servicewomen

The Defense Department orders that pregnant servicewomen may remain on active duty with discharges only on request. The change, issued by the civilian secretariat across all four services, aims to boost equal opportunity while maintaining duties to children. Previously, the 1981 rule discharged pregnant personnel unless they could prove they could meet duties and childcare, a policy linked to abortion encouragement claims. The Army notes high rates of pregnancy discharges but also shows many enlisted women have minor children, suggesting waivers were common under prior rules.
