Senators oppose Pentagon AWACS sale to Iran
Washington senators clash over a Pentagon plan to sell Iran seven AWACS air defense radar systems worth about 1.2 billion dollars. Critics led by John Culver warn the transfer risks technology falling into unfriendly hands and escalating Middle East instability. Supporters say the defensive system with American personnel can help restrain Iran while not sparking a regional arms race. The proposal awaits congressional action within a 30 day window to block it.
