New York findings from two studies covering 3500 middle aged women across seven countries show that smoking accelerates menopause. The more a woman smokes the earlier menopause occurs with heavy smokers reaching menopause sooner than light smokers or never smokers.
Researchers from Boston University and Harvard School of Public Health found a striking association between smoking and earlier menopause in women across multiple countries. The study, part of the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program, suggests nicotine may affect hormone secretion leading to earlier menopause.
Boston researchers link smoking to earlier menopause and higher heart disease risk. Among 3534 women surveyed, interviews covered habits, menopausal status, and medical histories within two larger US and international studies spanning 24 hospitals.
Ottawa reports the government will form a three member royal commission to probe alleged RCMP illegal break ins and other unauthorized methods. The probe follows a 1972 raid on the office of Agence Presse Libre in Montreal and ongoing investigations in three provinces.
