In Syracuse New York Al Unser and Mario Andretti finished one two in the 100 mile USAC dirt track championship at the New York State Fairgrounds. Unser earned $10 000 for the win as the opening event in the five race series. Greg Weld finished third. Temperature rose to 95 in the stands and 120 on the track. Gary Bettenhausen suffered a broken hand when his car vaulted a wall during warmups.
