Navy destroyers welcomed to Los Angeles from Western Pacific
Two US Navy destroyers USS Theodore E. Chandler and destroyer escort Alber David returned to Pier 16 after six months in the Western Pacific. They participated in Operation End Sweep near Haiphong and provided fire support near Pusan during Vietnam era operations. Commanders Murphy and Gost led the ships with Squadron 13 aboard David. Sailors shopped heavily at liberty ports in Olongapo, Manila, Pusan, Yokosuka, Sasebo, Hong Kong and Kaohsiung before departing for Los Angeles.

Residents discuss Old Town plans in Seal Beach meeting
More than 100 Seal Beach residents attended a three hour session on the proposed updating of the city general plan for Old Town. Moderated by planning director Hubert Neprud and consultant Don Smith, objections focused on high density housing and beach area development. Smith noted the May 2 plan submission was invalid and additional meetings are likely before final adoption, with a broader plan for the rest of the city due July 11.

Student Guilty in Resisting Arrest After Campus Demo
A Long Beach State University student pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to resisting arrest after an April 25 campus demonstration. Tom Blackburn, 26, admitted to struggling with campus officers at the Health Center and was sentenced to 20 days in county jail but probation and a fine were imposed.
