Nixon blocks Continental route to Australia and New Zealand
The Civil Aeronautics Board’s decision for a South Pacific route favored Continental, but President Nixon overruled citing domestic considerations. He subtly suggested Eastern Airlines as the preferred recipient, citing potential conflicts of interest involving the Rockefeller family and political ties with Continental. 60th Year as a Pilot Celebrated With Spin in Homemade Plane
Waldo Waterman, 75, marked his 60th year as a pilot by flying a monoplane he built at Gllespie Field in El Cajon. He recalled first flying on July 1, 1909 and noted older pilots may exist but did not obtain licenses as early. Waterman’s career spans Berkeley aviation school duty in 1910, World War II civilian pilot training coordination in Pasadena, and a homebuilt engine powered plane at the San Diego Yacht Club. He and wife Cara recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary and have a daughter and two granddaughters. The airport manager predicted Waterman will likely celebrate again in a decade. Cambodia and the United States agreed to resume diplomatic relations at the charge d’affairs level, per the Cambodian press agency.
