Injured pilot survives 54 days in Sierra wilderness
Lt. David A. Steeves parachuted from a T33 jet near May 9 and wandered for 54 days in High Sierra. He crawled 12 miles to a ranger cabin, sought food from canned goods, caught fish with makeshift hooks, and trapped a deer. He lost 30 to 60 pounds, survived cold without frostbite, and credited faith for his return. Parents in Trumbull, Conn., had been told he was dead before his recovery.
