Ex-official sues port in slander case
William Chernus, former traffic manager of the Los Angeles Harbor Department, filed a 3.45 million dollar slander action against the harbor department's interim general manager Donald Walsh and four harbor commissioners. The suit contends statements to the press damaged Chernus by insinuating wrongdoings tied to former Harbor Commission President John Y. Chu, who resigned after a meeting with Mayor Tom Bradley. Chernus was then fired. An informed source said police interviewed two Korean Airlines clerks amid an inquiry ordered by Bradley. The city attorney and U.S. attorney offices were asked to review potential civil rights issues relating to the inquiry and actions.
