A drug selling ring centered around three Costa Mesa area schools led to nine arrests and more expected suspects in a Costa Mesa police probe. Adults Loretta Lee Gonfeales Stephen Reid Lusk Steven Macdonald Dolla and Richard Zod Magvo faced charges for marijuana sales and possession. Juvenile Hall held nine other suspects on charges ranging from opium hashish sale to marijuana possession as police run undercover operations over a month.

In a letter to the editor opposing marijuana restrictions, Col John J Kovarik, a Vietnam veteran and former evacuation hospital commander, estimates that up to 30 percent of American soldiers in Vietnam have used marijuana. He notes no breakdown between habitual users and those who tried it briefly, saying his figure vastly exceeds Pentagon estimates of about five in 1,000.
